What exactly does SourceSquid do?

We build and run global supply chains — supplier discovery, qualification, RFQ-to-PO execution, quality inspection — and we make them defensible, with ISO management systems, ESG due diligence and regulatory readiness (EUDR, CBAM, CSRD) built into the same program. One firm, both ends of the chain.

How do you charge?

Three models, always disclosed upfront: fixed-fee projects with named deliverables, monthly program retainers for ongoing sourcing and quality management, and per-service pricing for inspections and audits. We never take hidden factory margins — our fee is the only way we earn.

Do you have minimum order quantities?

MOQs belong to factories, not to us — and negotiating them is part of our job. We run programs from pilot lots and bridge production up to multi-container recurring purchase orders.

Which countries do you source from?

China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia and the wider low-cost-country landscape, coordinated from our Bengaluru headquarters and Ningbo office. Country selection is an output of your program — tariffs, compliance exposure and category strengths decide it, not habit.

How do your inspections work?

AQL levels are written into the purchase order before production. We run during-production checks (DUPRO), pre-shipment inspections (PSI) and container-loading supervision to ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 discipline, with photographic reports typically within 24 hours and every result feeding the supplier's scorecard.

Can you get us — or our suppliers — ISO certified?

We run gap-to-certificate readiness programs across ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, 27001, 50001 and FSSC 22000 at certified lead-auditor level: gap assessment, system build, internal audit and certification-body preparation. The certificate itself is always issued by an independent accredited body — that separation protects you.

We import into the EU or US — can you handle EUDR, CBAM, CSRD and UFLPA?

Yes — that is the point of the firm. We screen regulatory exposure at supplier selection, collect the evidence (geolocation files, emissions data, chain-of-custody) during the program, and prepare the disclosures and due-diligence statements your regulators and auditors will interrogate.

How is our intellectual property protected?

Mutual NDAs before any drawing moves, China-enforceable NNN agreements with suppliers, need-to-know file segregation, and drawings watermarked per supplier. IP discipline is a supplier-qualification gate, not an afterthought.

Do you replace our procurement team?

For enterprise clients, we extend it — an on-ground execution and assurance arm your team directs. For DTC and founder-led brands, we often are the supply chain function until scale justifies one in-house. Either way, you own the supplier relationships; everything is documented in your name.

How do we start?

What is the EU Deforestation Regulation, in one paragraph?

The EUDR (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115) prohibits placing seven commodities — cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, soya and wood — and their derived products on the EU market unless they are deforestation-free, produced legally, and covered by a due diligence statement filed in the EU Information System. Derived products reach far beyond the obvious: leather goods, chocolate, tyres, furniture, paper and packaging are all in scope.

When did enforcement actually start?

Obligations apply to large and medium operators from 30 December 2025, and to micro and small enterprises from 30 June 2026. In other words: as of mid-2026, the EUDR is no longer a preparation exercise for anyone. If you import in-scope goods into the EU, your due diligence statements are a live legal obligation on every consignment.

What must your suppliers actually provide?

Three things, and there is no soft version of any of them. First, geolocation: the coordinates of every plot of land where the relevant commodity was produced — polygon data for plots above four hectares. Second, a production window: when the commodity was grown or harvested, proving production after the 31 December 2020 deforestation cut-off. Third, legality evidence: documentation that production complied with the laws of the country of origin, from land-use rights to labour law.

What does a supplier declaration that "passes" look like?

It traces the physical product, not the trading relationship. A declaration naming the exporter is worthless if the exporter aggregates from untraced smallholders. Passing evidence chains the specific lot back to specific plots — with geolocation files your operator can attach to its due diligence statement. If a supplier cannot segregate certified and uncertified material in their own operations, their paperwork cannot save you.

How is risk classified, and why does it change your workload?

The Commission benchmarks producer countries as low, standard or high risk. Sourcing from low-risk countries qualifies for simplified due diligence; high-risk origins trigger enhanced scrutiny and a higher share of customs checks. This is now a sourcing-strategy variable: two suppliers with identical pricing can carry very different compliance overheads purely on origin.

What happens if you get it wrong?

Penalties include fines of up to at least 4% of EU-wide turnover, confiscation of goods and revenues, and exclusion from public procurement. Commercially, the sharper risk is a customs hold: goods stuck at the border while you reconstruct evidence you should have collected at the PO stage.

The cheapest bid is disqualified more often than the most expensive: prices below the material floor, impossible implied cycle times, and uniform percentages across variants are the three fingerprints of a quote you cannot trust.

What is a should-cost model?

A should-cost model is a bottom-up estimate of what a product ought to cost to manufacture — raw material, process time, labour, factory overhead, tooling amortisation, packaging, and a fair margin — built independently of any supplier's quote. It converts negotiation from opinion-trading into evidence, and it is the fastest way to detect a quote that is either padded or dangerously underpriced.

Why is an underpriced quote a red flag, not a win?

A price below a defensible cost floor means the supplier is planning to recover the gap somewhere you cannot see: substituted material grades, skipped processes, quality shortcuts, a tooling ransom at round two, or a price "correction" once your volumes depend on them. In our quote teardowns, the structurally cheapest bid is disqualified more often than the most expensive one.

How do you build the material math?

Start with net weight, add process scrap (every process has a characteristic scrap range — machining, casting and cut-and-sew behave very differently), and multiply by a verifiable commodity price for the specified grade, not a generic one. If a quoted piece price sits below the material cost alone, stop: you are not looking at a price, you are looking at a plan.

What do cycle time and machine rate reveal?

Divide process cost by a realistic machine-hour rate for the country and asset class, and you get the cycle time the supplier is implicitly claiming. When that implied cycle time is physically impossible for the geometry — a deep-draw part "made" in nine seconds — the quote was reverse-engineered from a target price, not built from a process plan.

Which pattern exposes a lazy quote fastest?

Uniform percentages. When a supplier quotes five variants and every line moves by the same percentage, nobody costed the variants — someone scaled a spreadsheet. Genuine cost structures diverge: different weights, different cycle times, different scrap. Uniformity is the fingerprint of guesswork.

What questions force clarity without burning the relationship?

Ask for the quote decomposed into material, process, tooling and margin — a professional supplier has this on hand. Ask which commodity index and date anchors the material price. Ask for tooling life in shots and what happens at end-of-life. None of these are hostile questions; suppliers who resist all three are telling you something.

What does AQL actually mean?

AQL — Acceptable Quality Limit — is the worst defect rate you are willing to tolerate as a process average, and it drives statistical sampling under ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 and ISO 2859-1. Instead of checking every unit, an inspector draws a defined sample whose size depends on lot size and inspection level, then accepts or rejects the entire lot against defect thresholds.

Which AQL should a consumer-goods buyer set?

The most common convention for consumer products: 0 for critical defects (anything unsafe or illegal — no critical defect is ever acceptable), 2.5 for major defects (would cause a return or complaint), and 4.0 for minor defects (cosmetic issues a customer would likely tolerate). Premium categories tighten majors to 1.5 or 1.0; the right answer is a commercial decision about your brand, made before production, in writing, on the PO.

How big is the sample, in practice?

Under General Inspection Level II — the default — a lot of 1,000 units draws a sample of 80; a lot of 5,000 draws 200. At AQL 2.5, that 80-piece sample accepts the lot at 5 major defects and rejects it at 6. The powerful part is what this buys you: statistically defensible acceptance from inspecting a fraction of the shipment, typically in a single man-day.

When should you inspect — and when is PSI too late?

A pre-shipment inspection (PSI) happens when goods are at least 80% packed — it is your last gate before money and cartons move. But PSI can only reject; it cannot repair a systemic problem discovered at day zero minus two. For new suppliers or new tooling, add a during-production check (DUPRO) at 20–40% completion, when correction is still cheap, and container-loading supervision when the shipment's integrity in transit matters.

How do India and China differ for inspection planning?

The statistical method is identical; the logistics are not. China's coastal clusters make next-day inspector deployment routine, while India's supplier geography is more dispersed — booking windows matter more, and combining supplier visits into circuits saves real money. In both countries, the non-negotiable is independence: the inspector reports to you, never scheduled through the factory alone.

How do you read the report like a professional?

Ignore the pass/fail stamp first and read the defect photographs and measurements: a "pass" with clustered near-threshold majors is a trend warning, and a "fail" on one correctable packaging issue is a Tuesday. Track defect categories across shipments — the pattern over five POs tells you more about a supplier than any single result.

What is CBAM, in one paragraph?

The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism prices the carbon embedded in imported goods so they carry the same carbon cost as EU-made equivalents under the EU Emissions Trading System. After a transitional reporting-only phase, the definitive regime applies from 2026: importers of in-scope goods declare embedded emissions and surrender CBAM certificates priced off the EU ETS.

Which products are in scope?

Six categories for now: iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen and electricity — including many downstream articles such as fasteners, structures and extruded profiles. A 2025 simplification introduced a de-minimis mass threshold around 50 tonnes per importer per year, exempting most occasional small importers while keeping the overwhelming majority of embedded emissions in scope. If you import metal components at commercial volume, assume you are in.

How does the math actually work?

Simplified: CBAM cost ≈ embedded tonnes of CO₂e per tonne of product × tonnes imported × the certificate price (tracking EU ETS allowances), minus any carbon price effectively paid at origin. The variable that moves everything is emissions intensity — and it is supplier-specific.

A worked illustration: one tonne of aluminium extrusion

Primary aluminium swings enormously with the electricity behind the smelter — coal-heavy grids can sit near 15–20 tCO₂e per tonne, hydro-powered smelters near 4, and high-recycled-content billet lower still. At an illustrative certificate price of €70–80 per tonne of CO₂e, the CBAM gap between a coal-powered and a hydro-powered chain on one tonne of extrusion can run to several hundred euros — often larger than the price difference between the two quotes. The cheapest FOB price is no longer the cheapest landed price.

Default values or real data?

Where importers lack supplier data, default emissions values apply — set conservatively, at the unflattering end of the range. Suppliers who can evidence lower actual intensity hand you a direct certificate saving. This is why we collect emissions data during supplier qualification: a factory’s electricity contract has become a commercial term.

What should buyers do this quarter?

Map which SKUs contain in-scope materials, even as components. Ask suppliers for installation-level emissions intensity. Re-rank the supplier panel on carbon-adjusted landed cost. And write CBAM data obligations into purchase-order terms — the importer holds the liability, so the contract should hold the data.

CSRD wave two: the supply chain data you should be collecting now

Where does CSRD actually stand after the omnibus?

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive is in force, wave-one companies are already publishing, and the 2025 “stop-the-clock” directive postponed waves two and three by two years while the omnibus package negotiates scope thresholds. Practical translation: fewer companies, later dates — but for those in scope, assured ESRS-aligned reporting with double materiality remains the destination.

Why does a delay for you not mean a delay for your suppliers?

Because the hardest datapoints in an ESRS report do not live inside your company — they live in your supply chain: Scope 3 emissions, workers in the value chain, resource flows, due-diligence outcomes. Supplier data has a maturation curve: year one is estimates, year two partial primary data, year three assurable. Count backwards from your first mandatory report and “later” collapses into “now”.

Which supplier datapoints matter most?

Four clusters carry most of the value-chain weight: purchased-goods emissions (Scope 3 Category 1 — the giant), supplier energy sources and intensity (which also feeds CBAM), social data on workers in the chain (which also feeds CSDDD and forced-labour regimes), and material circularity. Collect once, satisfy four regimes.

What about the value-chain cap?

ESRS limits what reporters may demand from SMEs in their chain, and the voluntary VSME standard gives smaller suppliers a proportionate template. Use it: a supplier who completes a VSME-shaped questionnaire once can serve all their EU customers, and response rates rise sharply when the ask is standardised rather than bespoke.

What does a sensible next two quarters look like?

Segment suppliers by spend and emissions relevance; send a short, standards-aligned data request to the top tier; write data obligations into new purchase orders; and baseline Scope 3 Category 1 with spend-based factors you will progressively replace with primary data. None of this requires your report to be due — all of it determines what that report costs.

FCL vs LCL from India: the real break-even

What are you actually choosing between?

FCL (Full Container Load) means the container is yours — sealed at the factory, opened at your door. LCL (Less than Container Load) means your cartons share a consolidator’s container, with extra handling at both ends: CFS receiving, consolidation, deconsolidation, delivery. That extra handling is where LCL’s costs and risks hide.

Why is the break-even so much lower than a full container?

Because LCL pricing is per CBM with a chain of fixed and destination fees stacked on top, while FCL is a flat box rate. As volume grows, LCL cost climbs linearly; FCL does not. On typical India–US and India–EU lanes the curves cross around 13–15 CBM — meaning a 20GP shipped just 40–45% full is often already cheaper than LCL, before counting risk.

What do LCL quotes hide?

Destination charges. The ocean leg can be quoted absurdly low — consolidators recover margin through destination CFS fees, handling, documentation and delivery charges that appear after your goods land. Always demand the all-in, door-level number for both options; comparing an LCL ocean rate to an FCL all-in rate is the most common freight mistake we see.

When does LCL still make sense?

Genuinely small shipments (roughly 2–10 CBM), samples and pilot lots, cash-flow-driven replenishment where inventory carrying cost outweighs freight efficiency, and multi-origin consolidation before you have volume. Below about 1–2 CBM, or when speed dominates, compare against air and courier instead — LCL’s fixed fees make tiny sea shipments irrational.

Does the math differ from India versus China?

The method is identical; the inputs differ. Indian gateways (Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai) run thinner LCL consolidation schedules on some lanes than the Shanghai–Shenzhen corridor, so LCL transit variance from India tends to be higher — one more thumb on the FCL side of the scale as volumes approach break-even.

How do you push the break-even in your favour?

Classification is law, not preference — but products legitimately sit at heading boundaries where duty rates differ by whole percentage points, and trade remedies multiply the stakes. A verified, defensible classification is routinely worth more than a full round of price negotiation.

Why does one product have two possible codes?

Because the Harmonized System classifies by legal rules — the General Rules of Interpretation — not by what a product is called. Composite goods, sets, parts versus accessories, and material-versus-function boundaries all create genuine classification questions. A live example from our own casework: automotive seat covers can plausibly be argued as motor-vehicle accessories in Chapter 87 or as textile furnishing articles in Chapter 63 — and the duty rates, and any trade-remedy exposure, differ materially between them.

How big is the money?

Base duty gaps of two to five percentage points between candidate headings are common; layer a trade remedy such as US Section 301 on Chinese-origin goods and the spread between two defensible classifications can reach double digits. On a million dollars of annual imports, one percentage point is ten thousand dollars — every year, compounding silently.

Is picking the cheaper code just evasion?

Picking a wrong cheaper code is. But where classification is genuinely arguable, importers are entitled — expected, even — to classify correctly at the most favourable defensible position, and to obtain certainty through a binding ruling (Binding Tariff Information in the EU, a ruling letter in the US). A ruling converts an opinion into a shield: it binds customs, not just you.

Where do FTAs change the answer?

Preferential agreements — India–UAE, India–Australia, the India–UK generation, USMCA, RCEP — grant reduced or zero duty only if the product meets rules of origin at its classified heading. Classification and origin strategy are one decision: a code shift can move a product into or out of an FTA’s rule of origin, which is why we model them together at the sourcing-strategy stage, not at the customs broker’s desk.

What does a defensible classification file contain?

A written rationale walking the GRI logic; technical documentation of materials, function and construction; photographs; the candidate headings considered and rejected, with reasons; and — for material exposures — a binding-ruling application. When customs queries the entry three years later, that file is the difference between a conversation and a penalty.

When should you re-examine your codes?

At every new product introduction, every sourcing-country change, every design change altering material composition, and every trade-remedy list update. Codes inherited from a forwarder’s data entry a decade ago are among the most expensive habits in importing.

Injection Moulding

Injection moulding is the workhorse of plastic part production: polymer melted, injected into a steel mould under high pressure, cooled and ejected — cycle times of seconds, per-part costs of cents, tooling costs of thousands. It is the right process when volumes justify the mould.

Properties & process

Thermoplastics (PP, ABS, PC, PA, POM and hundreds of grades) shot at 60–200 MPa into machined steel or aluminium tooling. Achievable tolerances ±0.1–0.2 mm typical, finer with process control; wall thickness discipline (1–3 mm, uniform) governs everything downstream.

Cost drivers & MOQ economics

Tooling dominates: a single-cavity commodity mould runs $1,500–8,000 in Asia, multi-cavity hot-runner tools 5–20× that. Per-part cost = resin + (machine rate × cycle ÷ cavities). MOQs of 5,000–10,000 pcs are economics, not policy — amortization maths. Resin price volatility passes straight through.

Common defects

Investment (lost-wax) casting produces near-net-shape metal parts with excellent surface finish and geometric freedom — the process of choice for complex stainless, alloy steel and cobalt-chrome parts from grams to ~50 kg where machining from solid would be wasteful.

Wax pattern → ceramic shell → burnout → pour → knockout → finish. Handles geometries no other casting process can; surface finish 3.2–6.3 Ra µm; linear tolerance ≈ ±0.5% of dimension (CT5–CT7 per ISO 8062). Stainless 304/316, 17-4PH, carbon and low-alloy steels are bread and butter.

CNC machining cuts finished parts directly from solid metal or plastic — the process for tight tolerances, low-to-mid volumes, and prototypes that must behave like production. No tooling cost, but every gram removed is money spent.

Properties & process

Milling (3/4/5-axis), turning, and mill-turn. Tolerances of ±0.05 mm routine, ±0.01 mm achievable with process control; surface finish to 0.8 Ra. Aluminium 6061/7075, steels, stainless, brass, POM and PEEK dominate. Material certs traceable per bar/billet lot.

Cost drivers & MOQ economics

Cost = material + (cycle time × machine rate) + setup amortized over quantity — which is why unit price falls steeply from 1 to 100 pcs and flattens after. Design drives cost: deep pockets, thin walls, tight tolerances on non-functional faces, and 5-axis-only features are the padding magnets.

Common defects

Out-of-tolerance features from tool wear or thermal drift, burrs at intersections, wrong material grade substitution, surface-finish misses, and threads cut to the wrong standard (metric/UNC confusion is real).

Inspection & testing

First-article inspection with full dimensional layout (CMM report on critical parts), material certificates traced to melt, thread gauging, and AQL sampling on repeat lots with CTF dimensions on every sampled unit.

Where to source it

India (Bengaluru, Pune, Coimbatore) for quality-critical work with strong English-drawing literacy; China (Shenzhen, Dongguan) for speed and volume; Vietnam growing for mid-complexity. Job shops vary wildly — machine list and inspection equipment tell you more than the website.

RFQ checklist

Specify: material grade and standard with cert requirement, critical dimensions flagged with tolerances (loosen the rest — it is free money), surface finish per face, thread standards explicitly, quantity tiers for pricing, and CMM report requirement on FAI.

FAQ — Why did the quote drop 40% when I loosened two tolerances?

Because those two tolerances forced a slower machine, extra ops or higher rejection. Tolerance is inventory you pay for whether you need it or not. Our DFM reviews strip unneeded precision before the RFQ goes out — that is where the 40% lives.

Aluminium Extrusion

Aluminium extrusion pushes heated billet through a shaped die to make constant-cross-section profiles — frames, heatsinks, enclosures, rails — at low tooling cost and excellent strength-to-weight. If your part is a shape swept along a length, extrusion is usually the answer.

Properties & process

Alloys 6061 and 6063 dominate (6063 for finish, 6061 for strength); temper T5/T6 specified separately. Wall thickness down to ~1 mm on small profiles; tolerance per EN 755-9 / ISO 2768. Anodizing, powder coat and mill finish are the standard surfaces; cut, drilled and CNC-finished profiles ship as kits.

Cost drivers & MOQ economics

Dies are cheap by tooling standards — $300–1,500 typical — making custom profiles viable at surprisingly low volumes. Price ≈ (LME aluminium + conversion premium) × weight + finishing + fabrication. MOQ is usually a billet run: 200–500 kg per profile.

Common defects

Die lines and pickup on show surfaces, twist and bow beyond straightness spec, anodizing colour variation between batches, wrong temper (T5 passed off as T6), and wall thinning at complex tongues.

Inspection & testing

Wall thickness and profile dimension checks against die drawing, straightness/twist per meter, anodizing thickness (eddy current, spec 10–25 µm typical), temper verification by hardness where structural, and colour panels retained per batch.

Where to source it

China (Guangdong, Jiangsu) has unmatched depth and finishing integration; India (Gujarat, Maharashtra) competitive and duty-advantaged into several markets; Vietnam and Malaysia relevant where trade-remedy duties bite China. Anti-dumping duties on Chinese extrusions exist in several jurisdictions — check before you quote, not after.

RFQ checklist

Specify: alloy AND temper, profile drawing with critical dimensions, straightness/twist tolerance, finish spec with anodic thickness, cut length and tolerance, fabrication ops, packaging (profiles scratch in transit — interleaving matters), and applicable trade-remedy exposure.

FAQ — Why is the same profile 30% dearer landed from China than India?

Usually trade remedies: several markets levy anti-dumping or countervailing duties on Chinese aluminium extrusions that do not apply to Indian origin. The FOB price comparison lies; the landed comparison decides. Run both through the Landed Cost Calculator with the right HS heading (7604).

Die Casting

High-pressure die casting injects molten aluminium, zinc or magnesium into hardened steel dies — thin-walled, complex metal parts at seconds-per-shot speed. The aluminium-part equivalent of injection moulding: high tooling cost, low unit cost, volume decides.

Properties & process

Alloys ADC12/A380 (aluminium) and Zamak 3/5 (zinc) dominate. Wall thickness 1.5–4 mm; tolerances ±0.1 mm achievable near the die; as-cast finish good enough for many housings. Zinc casts thinner and truer, dies last far longer; aluminium is lighter and stiffer.

Cost drivers & MOQ economics

Dies are the entry fee: $5,000–50,000 depending on size and cavitation, with die life 80k–150k shots (aluminium) vs 500k+ (zinc). Unit economics beat machining above roughly 1,000–5,000 pcs. Secondary ops — trimming, machining of sealing faces, coating — often cost more than the casting.

Common defects

Porosity (the die-casting disease — gas and shrinkage), cold shuts, flash, blistering after powder coat from trapped gas, drags and solder marks, and dimensional drift as dies wear.

Inspection & testing

X-ray or sectioning agreement for pressure-tight or structural parts, defined porosity acceptance criteria (ASTM E505 reference plates), leak testing where sealed, coating adhesion cross-hatch tests, and first-article dimensional layout with capability data on CTF features.

Where to source it

China (Guangdong, Zhejiang, Chongqing) is the global centre with die-making integration; India (Pune, NCR, Coimbatore) strong and growing on automotive lines; Taiwan for precision zinc. The die shop matters as much as the foundry — ask who cuts the steel.

RFQ checklist

Specify: alloy per standard, porosity class and where it is forbidden, machining datums and sealing faces, die ownership + guaranteed die life + replacement terms, coating spec with adhesion test, and PPAP-style approval for automotive-adjacent work.

FAQ — Casting looks fine, leaks under pressure — what happened?

Internal porosity connected by machining. The part was never sealed metal; cutting the sealing face opened the sponge. Fix is process (vacuum assist, gating) plus acceptance criteria (X-ray class), not sorting. Write porosity class into the PO before tooling, not after the leak.

Sheet Metal Fabrication

Sheet metal fabrication — laser cutting, punching, bending, welding, finishing — turns flat stock into enclosures, brackets, chassis and panels with near-zero tooling. The fastest route from CAD to metal at low and mid volumes.

Properties & process

Mild steel (CRCA), stainless 304/316, aluminium 5052 in 0.5–6 mm dominate. Laser tolerance ±0.1 mm on flat features; bend tolerance ±0.5° and ±0.2–0.5 mm stack-up per bend — design datums accordingly. Powder coat, plating and brushed finishes standard.

Cost drivers & MOQ economics

No hard tooling: cost = material + cut time + bends + welds + finish, so complexity is visible in the quote line by line. Volume discounts are shallow. Nesting efficiency matters on expensive stock — good fabricators quote better yield.

Common defects

Bend angle and position drift, weld spatter and distortion, scratches through finish on show faces, hardware (PEM inserts) missing or loose, powder coat thin on edges, and holes deformed near bends.

Inspection & testing

First-article against flat pattern and bend drawing, weld visual per agreed class (or ISO 5817 level), coating thickness and adhesion checks, hardware torque verification, and AQL visual on show surfaces with defined viewing distance.

Where to source it

India (Pune, Bengaluru, NCR) excellent for export-grade enclosures with strong English drawings; China (Suzhou, Shenzhen) for integrated high-volume assemblies; Vietnam rising. Distinguish job shops from product fabricators — ask to see something like your part.

RFQ checklist

Specify: material grade and thickness with cert, bend tolerances only where functional, weld class and which seams are cosmetic, finish spec per face with colour standard, hardware BOM with insertion spec, and packaging that survives the lane.

FAQ — Why do two fabricators quote 2× apart on the same drawing?

They read different processes into it: one nests better, bends smarter and welds less; the other throws labour at ambiguity. Tight drawings collapse the spread. Our RFQ packs include flat patterns and weld maps precisely so quotes compare like-for-like.

The Atlas — Material

Polypropylene (PP)

Polypropylene is the volume king of commodity plastics — light, chemically resistant, fatigue-tough (living hinges!), food-safe in the right grades, and cheap. Packaging, housewares, automotive interiors, textiles and medical disposables all run on PP.

Properties & process

Density ~0.90 g/cm³ (floats), melting ~165 °C, excellent chemical and moisture resistance, poor UV stability unless stabilized, embrittles near 0 °C unless copolymerized. Homopolymer (stiffer) vs copolymer (tougher, cold-resistant); melt-flow index selected to process. Grades matter more than the name.

Cost drivers & MOQ economics

Priced off polymer-grade propylene: resin is 60–80% of part cost on simple mouldings, so PP part prices track oil and regional resin indices — index-link long contracts. Recycled PP (rPP) saves 20–40% where spec allows, but contamination control separates good rPP from trouble.

Common defects

Warpage (high shrink, 1.5–2%), brittleness from wrong grade in cold chains, UV chalking outdoors without stabilizer, odour and contamination in low-grade recyclate, and colour drift between resin lots.

Inspection & testing

Grade verification via MFI test and certificate chain to the resin producer, FTIR where substitution is suspected, food-contact declarations (FDA/EU 10/2011) with migration test reports for food use, and functional cold-drop tests for winter markets.

Where to source it

Everywhere polymer is cracked: China, India (RIL grades widely exported), Middle East, Southeast Asia. For converted goods, China and India dominate; for rPP, India's recycling ecosystem is deep but quality-stratified — audits earn their fee here.

RFQ checklist

Specify: grade by producer datasheet (or equivalent with MFI/izod minima), virgin vs recycled content with tolerance, colour masterbatch standard, UV package if outdoor, food-contact compliance documents, and lot traceability requirement.

FAQ — Is recycled PP safe for my product?

For food contact, only with EFSA/FDA-cleared processes — rare and premium. For everything else, rPP is excellent when the recycler controls input streams and tests each lot; we have managed BPA-contamination cases that started with 'trust us' pellets. Certificates per lot, or virgin.

The Atlas — Material

ABS

ABS is the engineering-lite thermoplastic of consumer goods — tough, rigid, glossy off the tool, easily coloured, plated or painted. Keyboards, appliance housings, toys, automotive trim and LEGO run on it.

Properties & process

Amorphous blend of acrylonitrile (chemical resistance), butadiene (impact), styrene (rigidity, gloss); ratios tuned per grade. Heat deflection ~85–100 °C, excellent impact at room temperature, low shrink (0.4–0.7%) so parts hold dimension, bonds and finishes beautifully. UV-poor — use ASA outdoors.

Cost drivers & MOQ economics

Resin 2–3× PP price; still moulds fast and forgivingly. Electroplatable grades and flame-retardant (UL94 V-0) grades carry premiums. Regrind tolerance is decent but impact strength decays with each pass — cap regrind percentage in the spec.

Common defects

Yellowing and gloss loss from over-hot processing, brittleness from excessive regrind, splay from undried resin, plating peel on wrong grades, and flame-retardant claims that vanish under UL verification.

Inspection & testing

Izod impact spot-checks against datasheet, gloss meter on show surfaces vs master, UL yellow-card verification for FR grades (verify the card, not the claim), colour under D65/TL84, and drop tests representative of real use.

Where to source it

China (Guangdong, Jiangsu) overwhelmingly for converted ABS goods; India growing in appliances and toys post-BIS; Vietnam for assembly-heavy products. Resin itself from Korea, Taiwan, China and India (major producers' grades travel worldwide).

RFQ checklist

Specify: grade family (GP, high-impact, plateable, FR with UL file number), regrind cap, colour standard and gloss level, surface class per face, and for toys/appliances the applicable compliance suite (EN 71, BIS, UL) with test reports per lot or per year as agreed.

FAQ — ABS or polycarbonate or a blend?

ABS for looks, cost and processing ease; PC for heat and extreme impact; PC/ABS to split the difference. If the part faces sun, none of the above — ASA. Grade selection is a five-minute conversation that prevents a five-figure retool.

Stainless Steel Castings

Cast stainless — CF8 (304), CF8M (316) and their kin — is how complex corrosion-resistant parts get made without machining a fortune away: valve bodies, pump parts, marine hardware, food-machinery components.

Properties & process

Cast grades differ from wrought: CF8M ≈ 316 but higher carbon options and ferrite content matter. Corrosion performance depends on chemistry AND post-cast pickling/passivation. Investment casting for finish and complexity; sand casting for size and price. Density 7.9 g/cm³ — weight is money.

Cost drivers & MOQ economics

Alloy surcharge (nickel, molybdenum) drives price with the LME — 316 family runs 20–40% over 304 family. Indian foundries typically quote ₹/kg or $/kg all-in with machining separate; weight optimization in design pays every single shipment.

Common defects

Shrinkage porosity in heavy sections, inclusions, wrong ferrite level (affects corrosion and cracking), chemistry drift between heats (a 316 order quietly poured as 304 is the classic fraud), and rust staining from missed passivation or contaminated finishing lines.

Inspection & testing

Per-heat spectro certificates non-negotiable, PMI (positive material identification) spot checks at inspection — an XRF gun settles the 304/316 question in seconds — dye penetrant on machined sealing faces, ferrite measurement where specified, and salt-spray or passivation verification for marine and food work.

India (Rajkot, Coimbatore) is the world's value centre for export stainless castings — we run comparison RFQs across Gujarat and Tamil Nadu foundries continuously; China (Wenzhou for valves) for integrated volume; Europe for pressure-directive documented work.

FAQ — How do I know I actually got 316?

Cut & Sew (Textiles)

Cut & sew is the process family behind garments, bags, covers, and technical textiles: fabric in, patterns cut, panels sewn, finished goods out. Labour-intensive, quality-sensitive, and the category where factory selection is most decisive.

Properties & process

Fabric (woven/knit/technical) + trims + labour. Quality lives in: fabric inspection (4-point system), marker efficiency (fabric yield), stitch selection (SPI, seam class per ASTM D6193), and needle discipline for anything with a metal-detection requirement. Samples: proto → fit → PP (pre-production) → shipment.

Cost drivers & MOQ economics

Cost = fabric (50–70%) + CMT (cut-make-trim) + trims + packing. CMT rates vary 3× across Asia by country and compliance level. MOQs are fabric-driven: mill minimums (500–1,000 m per colourway) set your floor more than the sewing line does.

Common defects

Measurement spec misses, shade variation between rolls and lots, skipped stitches and open seams, twisted legs/panels, print misregistration, trims substituted, and the eternal one: PP sample approved, bulk quietly different.

Inspection & testing

Inline (DUPRO) inspection during sewing catches drift early; final AQL 2.5/4.0 on measurements, workmanship and packing; fabric tests (GSM, shrinkage, colour fastness, pilling) per lot; metal detection certificates where required; and a sealed PP sample that bulk is judged against.

India (Tiruppur knits, NCR wovens, Jaipur artisan) with strong compliance depth; Bangladesh for volume price; Vietnam for technical and outdoor; China (Guangdong, Zhejiang) for speed, trims ecosystems and technical fabrics. Compliance (SMETA, WRAP) is table stakes for Western retail.

RFQ checklist

Specify: full measurement spec with tolerances, graded size set, fabric composition + GSM + test requirements, seam/stitch spec on critical seams, trims BOM with approved sources, shade band procedure, PP sample sign-off gate, and AQL levels in the PO.

FAQ — Why did bulk differ from my approved sample?

Because the sample room and the production line are different factories inside the same building. The controls that close the gap: PP sample sealed by both parties, inline inspection at 20–30% complete, and final AQL against the sealed sample — all written into the PO. That is our standard garment protocol.

Corrugated Packaging

Corrugated board is the product that protects your product — and the most under-specified line in most BOMs. Box failure costs more than box quality ever will: crush damage, chargebacks, and marketplace suspensions all start with a weak carton.

Properties & process

Liner + fluted medium: flute profiles (A/B/C/E/BC) trade cushioning against print and stack strength. Strength specified by ECT (edge crush, stacking) or burst (Mullen); board grade = liner weights + flute, e.g. 32 ECT C-flute single wall. Moisture is kryptonite — humidity halves stacking strength.

Cost drivers & MOQ economics

Paper is 70%+ of cost and tracks containerboard indices — index-link annual contracts. Tooling (die + print plates) $100–800; MOQs 500–3,000 pcs. Right-sizing beats upgrading: a box 2 cm smaller in each dimension often saves more freight than the board costs.

Common defects

Under-spec board (claimed 32 ECT testing at 26), crush and warp from wet storage, print misregistration and colour drift, wrong internal dimensions (the classic: OD given, ID needed), and glue-lap failures.

Inspection & testing

ECT/burst testing per lot (cheap, decisive), box compression test (BCT) on the finished carton against stacking maths (McKee estimate × safety factor 3–5 for export), dimension checks internal, drop tests per ISTA where marketplace rules apply (FBA!), and print vs approved proof.

Where to source it

Source near the filling point — corrugated ships air. In Asia-sourced programs, the product factory buys locally: your job is the spec, not the supplier. India, China, Vietnam all have deep converting; the differentiator is testing discipline, so put lot testing in the product PO.

RFQ checklist

Specify: board grade with ECT/burst number, internal dimensions, flute, print (colours, coverage, proof approval), moisture barrier if humid lane, ISTA/marketplace test compliance, and lot test certificates as a PO deliverable from the product supplier.

FAQ — Amazon keeps flagging damaged inbound — box or product?

Usually the box, chosen by the factory to win the quote. Demand the board grade in writing, require ISTA-6 style testing for FBA lanes, and BCT-check a sample lot. A two-dollar carton problem presents as a two-thousand-dollar chargeback problem.

Bamboo spans commodity to premium: kitchenware, furniture, flooring, textiles and engineered panels — a fast-renewable material with genuine ESG credentials when the supply chain behind it is real, and greenwash when it is not.

Properties & process

Moso bamboo dominates industrial use. Formats: natural round, laminated strips (vertical/horizontal press), strand-woven (densest, hardest), and viscose 'bamboo fabric' (chemically regenerated — market it honestly). Moisture content 8–12% at pack-out decides whether products crack in dry-climate retail.

Cost drivers & MOQ economics

Raw bamboo is cheap; drying, lamination, machining and finishing are the cost. Adhesive class (E0/E1 formaldehyde) and food-safe finishes carry premiums worth paying. MOQs 500–2,000 pcs typical on housewares; furniture by container economics.

Common defects

Cracking and warp from rushed kiln drying, mould from wet packing (the #1 claim on bamboo shipments), formaldehyde exceedances from cheap glue, finish odour, and inconsistent colour between production batches.

Inspection & testing

Moisture meter checks at pre-shipment (8–12% target, lane-adjusted), formaldehyde test reports (EN 717 / CARB) per adhesive lot, food-contact migration tests for kitchenware (LFGB is the strict benchmark), mould-preventive packing verification (desiccant, breathable wrap), and finish adhesion checks.

Where to source it

China (Zhejiang, Fujian, Anhui) is the overwhelming centre with full industrial depth; Vietnam strong in furniture and handicraft; India emerging under national bamboo mission programs. FSC-certified bamboo exists and matters for EU retail — verify the certificate scope actually covers your product.

Specify: format and species, moisture content at packing with meter verification, adhesive class with test report, finish system and food-safety report, mould-prevention packing spec, FSC claim scope if made, and colour/grain tolerance with boundary samples.

FAQ — Is bamboo automatically the sustainable choice?

No — it is the *plausibly* sustainable choice. Fast renewal is real; the questions are chemistry (adhesives, viscose processing) and land use. For EUDR-adjacent and CSRD-reporting buyers we document the chain: plantation, mill, adhesive, finish. That documentation is what turns a claim into a defensible one.
